This Responsive Literacy Framework supports literacy in the middle years (Grades 4-9). According to Fountas and Pinnell, "Successful language and literacy learning is built on your understanding of how students develop as readers, writers and language users". Our responsive literacy framework offers support for individual teachers to generate a literacy approach by highlighting promising practices, assessment and planning tools to support the diverse needs of our learners. It includes a balance of instructional approaches through ongoing, formative assessments that respond to individual needs. Through responsive teaching, high expectations, formative assessment, exploration, inclusion and gradual release of responsibility, we understand how are students are progressing and building competencies. Joy and play with reflection and growth are the foundation of our responsive literacy framework. Ultimately, our goal is for our students to become independent readers, writers and language users as educated citizens in our society.
