Language and story are sources of creativity and joy for K-3 students. Playing with language and using language in creative ways helps children discover and understand how language works. In the K-3 classroom, we use stories and other texts to help students learn about themselves, their families, and their communities and celebrate the unique story that everyone has to share. Through listening and speaking, students connect with others and share their world. Literacy-rich classrooms foster curiosity and wonder and lead K-3 students to new discoveries about themselves and the world around them. In SD22, we believe in fostering student choice and voice as they learn to become joyful readers and writers.
