January is Tamil Heritage Month. The Tamil people are an ethnic group originally from southern India and Sri Lanka with a recorded history going back more than 2,000 years. Tamils began immigrating to Canada as early as the 1950s. The outbreak of riots and eventual civil war in Sri Lanka in 1983 let to the increase in immigration to Canada. Despite the tremendous obstacles that Tamil Canadians had to overcome before and after their arrival to Canada, they have made great contributions to Canada’s social, economic, political and cultural fabric. The Tamil population in Canada is 160 000 and growing.
