Middle Years Programming

Based on the local and provincial data, the Ministry of Education and Health Care has emphasized the need for supporting the intellectual and developmental needs and characteristics of young adolescents. Our provincial data results (Literacy and Numeracy FSAs) revealed a declining trend from our grade 4s and 7s over the last 3 years and our local surveys (satisfaction surveys, FESL, MDI) from the youth within this age group indicate that their engagement is diminishing; they have little choice in their learning; and they are feeling their voices are not being heard. Academic reviews gathered street data from our administration and school teams to suggest students moving from our elementary systems to our secondary systems as area of focus for early intervention and success in the Graduation Years. Our district committed to prioritizing improving middle grade transition to secondary school and to support student wellness, voice and choice by including these goals in the strategic plan. The Learning Department will build on the work done in 2022-2023 and 2023-24 by further developing our middle years program to ensure our learners experience success.

Year 1 - Exploration and Building

Year 1 will have us exploring middle years pedagogy that helps our middle years experience success and support them with their transition from elementary to secondary school.  We will collaboration, set goals, take risks, reflect, share and celebrate as we implement ACTIONABLE PLANS.  Teachers will have agency as we work to be responsive to the needs of schools and students as well as develop some collective efficacy across schools. We will work to generate stronger relationships between teachers within the family of schools and encourage conversation, planning and interacting outside of our designated time together.  Each school will have 3-4 half days of release per teacher plus regular check ins and “what’s next” with our Learning Coordinator.

Year 2 - Growing and Going Deeper

The Learning Department goal for Year Two is to ensure the teachers who participated in Year One continue to be supported and grow through continued collaboration and exploration.  We will encourage teachers to continue to consider how to best support their learners by continuing to build on the momentum from last year and address the goals the teachers feel they didn’t address as much as they would have liked.    We will have less instructional time to collaborate and plan within their families of schools. We will continue to explore and go deeper into middle years pedagogy and philosophy . We will continue to reflect, set goals by revisiting strategic goals yet to be addressed within the school or family of schools.  Principals and Vice Principals will continue to put value in to the framework, celebrate, highlight successes, share stories, problem solve with their schools’ teachers. There will be a gradual release of responsibility as teachers and schools begin to plan and implement within their own realms and the learning coordinator will continue to support the needs of the individual schools and teachers as we move forward with the framework.

Year 3 - Sustainability and Culture

The Learning Department goal for Year Three is to continue to support each family of schools to maintain momentum, create sustainability, and celebrate the culture of the middle years in their school. There will be even more release of responsibility for the schools and the discussions and planning for our middle years learners will hopefully be at the forefront of our ideation. The family of schools' Learning Coordinators will support within their families of schools and offer opportunity to revisit our collective strategic goals and see how we can address them as we continue to move forward. The Learning Coordinators will check in with teachers, Principals and Vice Principals and students to continually be responsive to the needs of the schools as well as inform and guide Middle Years pedagogy and philosophy at staff meetings, curriculum meetings, department meetings.
