Learning Department: International Moves for Big Gains
On September 3, the Learning Department welcomed 19 Middle Years School Learning Leads from elementary and secondary schools across the district for a dynamic Literacy Institute focused on strengthening literacy instruction and enhancing student success. Throughout the day, teachers deepened their understanding of foundational literacy skills, explored effective instructional practices, and collaborated with colleagues from across SD22.
A key focus was the instructional practice of conferring: purposeful one-to-one conversations that build understanding, provide timely feedback, and strengthen learning. Participants examined how this routine can support student engagement and literacy growth in meaningful and responsive ways. The afternoon included dedicated collaborative planning time as teachers prepared for the year ahead, followed by reflection on the small, intentional moves they can make in classrooms to further enhance literacy achievement.
The Literacy Institute highlighted the power of professional learning and collaboration, reinforcing the district’s collective commitment to ensuring every learner experiences success.
