Tablets have become an integral part of how we interact with technology. There are many educational benefits of using this technology in an educational setting as well as many challenges with the management of these devices in an educational context.

It is important to note that an iOS device used in an educational setting has some different requirements than an iOS device used for personal use. One of the main differences is an educational iPad should not be set up for use with iCloud. The reason for this has to do with our privacy obligations laid out by the Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act (FOIPPA). For this reason, the iCloud has been disabled for students and teachers.

An iOS device used in an educational setting should not be logged into a personal iTunes account. iOS devices for teacher use should be set up with an account with the appropriate school district email and attached to no credit card or payment method. This will allow the teacher to add free applications to their iPad but purchased applications would need to be purchased through the technology department.

Student iOS devices have more restrictions on their use due to our privacy obligations. Students are not able to log into an iTunes account or iCloud. They cannot add or remove applications from the devices and this will have to be done by the technicians. Some applications are available to the teachers' iOS devices only and students will not have access to; such as iTunes Store, Messages, and App Store.

To find the name of the device.
  • Assign Devices: Decide how many devices will be shared and assign each a unique identifier (e.g., Device 1, Device 2).
